The Good News About Depression

By John Stephan Laney

First off, depression isn't bad. All of us human beings get to deal with depression. It happens, it comes up in life. Depression isn't bad or wrong, it is simply human. It actually goes with having an emotional body, and it aint bad and you arent wrong or broken for feeling it.

Depression is generally described as feeling listless, empty, devoid of energy, unhappy, deficient, bad and wrong. So I'm saying that feeling bad and feeling an unpleasant sense of wrongness is often a part of depression, but you aren't bad or wrong for feeling depressed. That feeling deficient, not ok, is part of depression, but you aren't deficient or not ok because you have those feelings.

Obviously, we all feel some of the symptoms of depression from time to time. We all occasionally feel unhappy. We all feel like we don't want to get out of bed at times. We all feel like we aren't getting pleasure anymore from things that gave us pleasure. Depression is generally diagnosed when we have these feelings often and repeatedly - lasting about two weeks or so.

None of us want to hear it, but feeling unhappy, listless, lethargic, despondent, downcast, meaningless and deficient is human. We each and every one of us have to deal with those feelings. But when feelings such as those stay around for more than a few hours, days or weeks (depending on our perspective) we go get a doctor to diagnos depression, or we give ourselves a diagnosis of depression.

This is why depression is so serious, because it involves all these unpleasant emotions that we don't want to feel for a minute, let alone for a few days or longer. One of the biggest features of depression is our resistance to it, we don't want to feel those emotions. Thus taking drugs to anesthetize those feelings is very popular.

You aren't bad or wrong for feeling depression!

Depression is called a mental illness or disease. Are you bad for catching a cold or the flu? Heck no! Just so, you aren't bad or wrong for feeling the illness of depression. And, just like the flu, it feels bad, sometimes awful, like you are going to die. But you aren't wrong for feeling like you are going to die when you have the flu, and you certainly aren't bad when you feel miserable from depression. It happens, and there are ways to make it go away quickly!

So the good news about this depression thing is that depression isn't bad, and you aren't bad or wrong for having it. Quite to the contrary, you are only "wrong" is you do nothing about it for too long and let it take over your life. But if, instead, you can look at depression as a learning experience, an opportuntity to learn how to deal with difficult emotions and heal yourself, then you are really in good shape!

More good news about depression is that it can be a powerful step in your own personal growth and development. It is a way to learn about your inner self, how you work, what turns you on and off, and how to deal with the negative emotions that come up in life for all of us. You can even learn a lot about how to actually thrive emotionally. Feeling depressed can lead to a greater level of self awareness and understanding that impacts us at a rewarding level.

One thing to notice is that we didn't get to take any classes on emotions at school. We didn't get to learn how to feel great, how to deal with difficult emotions, how to heal unpleasant feelings. Depression can therefore be seen as a way to increase your emotional intelligence. This will have rewards that will last years. You can start your journey of learning to increase your emotional intelligence by going to amazon.com and picking up a book on emotions. - 18000
